Astro Communications Rows Hard for the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN)
Astro Communications Limited has raised over £2,000 for the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability at this year’s Row Hard event at City Hall
Kent, UK 18th June 2015
The RHN is one of the UK’s leading centres for the rehabilitation and care of adults with profound disabilities resulting from brain injury or neurological illness. Based in Putney, South London, RHN has over 150 years of experience in developing and providing specialist skills, services and care for those whose complex and profound needs cannot be met by general mainstream providers.
This year the Row Hard event which is arguably one of the City’s most competitive events, is in its 6th Year, and on Wednesday night 26 teams, including one from Astro Communication took to a bank of rowing machines in an attempt to beat last year’s total raised of £50,000. The team: Steve (Popeye) Hodges, Andrew (Bluebeard) Tomkinson, James (Pugwash) Tuck, Joe (Birdseye) Wing rowed their little hearts out and were placed 8th but in the process raised over £2,000 for the charity. If you would like to add to their total the link is still open until 17th September 2015.

Steve Smith, Founder and CTO of Astro, whose daughter has been in the rehabilitation unit at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability for some months and will be until July, commented “This is a fantastic event to raise money for the wheelchair pool. Each of these wheelchairs has to be custom modified to meet each patient’s needs by the hospital’s biomedical engineers. This is real ‘old school engineering’ and her custom modified wheelchair was one of the first steps to restoring some quality to my daughter’s life“. Steve was also asked by the RHN to providing a brief talk for the event as a personal account of what the funds mean to the patients and their families.
Astro support a limited number of important charities each year both with small donations and perhaps more importantly with direct involvement through volunteering or providing advice or services of a technical nature. These include Camp Cando and The Bud Flanagan Leukaemia Fund as well as a number of charitable causes – including The Collett School in Hemel Hempstead – through Steve’s Livery Company The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists. Although, our involvement in RHN naturally has a very personal connection indeed.
Steve Hodges, Managing Director of Astro Communications Limited commented: “We are delighted to be supporting such a great event for such an important charity – it was great fun and it would seem that all that training really paid off!, we look forward to making our way up the leader board next year!”
