Astro have had a longstanding relationship with Wightlink Ferries for over 20 years and are now responsible for their entire LAN, WLAN and WAN along with other telecommunications infrastructure. Wightlink have a number of locations across the south coast of the UK and on the Isle of Wight and communication is key to every aspect of their business; from ticketing to keeping the ships in communication with the ports. The complexity and versatility of the port environments as well as the seasonal nature of the network usage makes the Wightlink network particularly complex. Also, the number of services that traverse the network, from PCI compliant card information to CCTV and voice services make the network demands complex. Network availability is critical for Wightlink as any loss of service would cause issues including the inability to book journeys in their contact centre; a serious issue with traffic build up across Portsmouth; and in peak times, such as Isle of Wight Festival and Cowes week, a huge PR problem. With this in mind, a resilient network architecture has been deployed using failover services of wired and wireless technology for the WAN and meshing for the WLAN, supported by a fully managed service from Astro.
